Fill cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Measure in vermouth and gin. Stir vigorously. Strain into cocktail glasses, or over ice cubes in Old-Fashioned glasses. Garnish each drink with a rinsed olive; the brine from olives can spoil the martini.
Strictly speaking the olives should be the small Manzanilla ones with the stones removed, not stuffed ones.
